About Joshua Andree

Joshua Andree (b. 1992) is a landscape painter based in Hobart, Tasmania. Andree’s large-scale works on linen reflect the climate and mood of the Island State of Tasmania, exploring the atmospheric relationships between land, sky and sea. His current body of work focuses primarily on the circumference of water that surrounds the Island, defining it against the harsh and unforgiving backdrop of the Southern Ocean. Andree’s practice sits within the tradition of Tasmanian Landscape painting, whilst his use of bold fluorescent pigment exaggerates its contemporary edge. The revelation of fluorescent orange on the edges' surface draws to the sense that the painting is an object in and of itself. Joshua holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours from the University of Tasmania. As well as being a regular finalist in the Tasmanian Portrait Prize and Henry Jones Art Prize, Andree was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Glover Prize for Landscape Painting in 2021. “Tasmania truly is the at end of the world. In any given moment, the face and personality of the coastline is markedly different. While the stories of our land can’t be told on the mere surface of a canvas, a moment of stillness can reverberate, captured by the body in space and relayed through mark, colour and gesture. This great land that I revere captivates me and always brings me back to a singular point and focus."- Joshua Andree, 2022
