About Julie Battisti

New Zealand based Artist, Julie Battisti, grew up in Melbourne, Australia and graduated from the Australian National University School of Art in 2006 in Canberra with a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in painting. She chose ANU for its focus on practical techniques and the option of taking a conjoint degree (Bachelor of Arts majoring in International Relations and Italian). Julie spent 10 years in Melbourne working in the fashion industry and expanding her studies further, she graduated with a Diploma of Education from Monash University, spending two years teaching Studio Arts and Photography before moving to New Zealand. "My interest in painting cloudscapes began as a form of escapism. They’re part of the landscape that can seem so impossible to touch and capture in some ways yet so incredibly easy to watch as they pass by. The process of painting clouds was a way for me to capture a tiny moment in time of an ever evolving form. In a lot of ways these Cloudscapes are a study of light and texture. The luminosity and lightfastness of oil paints allow me to experiment with compositions of varied depths. I create a sense of depth with glazes of blues and greens in some areas and also pushing the foreground forward with layers of opaque white. I have created these compositions without a horizon line, freeing me to take the viewer into the atmosphere of the work and avoid grounding the work. I am interested in recreating shapes and textures that naturally decay and devolve with time. In a world where some days it feels everything moves too quickly: flowers wilt, phones ring, clouds disperse; an artwork has the ability to stand still."
