About Nathan Betts

Nathan Betts is a Melbourne-based emerging artist, born and raised in New Zealand. His inquisitive portraits find their genesis - birthed from a deeply rooted curiosity of the interplay between colour, form, line and space. Fascinated by the graphic works and ideologies of the Pop Art movement and the intensity of imagery and colour from Artists like Francis Bacon, Nathan developed his own stylistic language. Embracing playful abstraction through vivid application of paint and oil pastel, Nathan's work calls forward and elevates the mundane. Glimpses of the everyday are captured to determine what mode the ordinary takes when documented. "I gravitate toward the figurative, how it freezes a fleeting moment, amplifies an emotion, initiates a relationship. For me the act of creating and exploring these moments and relationships is a high wire act - don't look down, just trust yourself. There is a conscious submission to allow autonomy within my work and the process itself which results in articulations that planning and intent alone would never achieve. It's a personally revealing process, sometimes intimate, sometimes purely observant. While I don't consciously endow my work with specific meaning, the finished pieces tend to intrinsically carry or develop a narrative along the way, inviting a reflection or question from the viewer. Each painting is always a reaction to the previous one, be it a desire to further explore a theme, or conversely turn away and look elsewhere. I don’t want to be static.”
