The Ernest Brothers - Daydream
Neil Tomkins and Digby Webster Artist Statement
This series of work comes from the inspiration of each other’s mark and a joyous mix of each of our styles. A continuation from our Archibald piece, the series follows on from the past few years of friendship and the possibilities that exist from sharing this bond.
Interested in a playful exploration of landscape we allowed collaborative works to be guided by each other’s sense of imagination. Painting on the canvas together each collaboration was made with direct contact and conversation from start to finish. Perusing and building on each other’s ideas and practice we continued; the process ultimately moving freely whilst being interconnected. Some of the works were painted plein air whilst others developed later in the studio, smaller scale pieces were created individually signifying our own unique styles and speaking to the work as a whole. Colour was an element of focus for both of us, layering bright and fluorescent flanks of paint, building up and working back areas to yield our compositions. Following our curiosity, the works brought about a dream like quality touching on the idea that what is hidden becomes clearer in the light of day, passing through us and taking form as a dream whilst wide awake.
