Peter’s exhibition encapsulates a profound sense of sacred beauty through its use of abstraction and subtle colour transitions. Central to Peter’s artistic exploration is the recurring motif of a circular form. This circular representation encompasses the intricacies of the mind, the thoughts that shape one's identity and the cycles that define our lives. The circle holds life's energy, it embodies the boundless journey of existence, with no clear beginning or end. Conversely, the use of the square within Peter’s work represents stability amid life's fluidity, providing structure and balance to our journeys and beliefs.
Peter’s work is subtle, reductive and expressive. His canvas becomes a sanctuary of open expanses, distilled to their very essence. Colour that appears singular is an amalgamation of countless hues converging in harmonious unison. Compositional harmony in Peter’s painting is a subjective journey guided by instinct it is a relentless quest for balance. Peter finds himself in a conversation with a painting that unfolds through rotating the canvas, each turn revealing new facets of elements, composition, colour, and spatial division. This contemplative ritual guides Peter toward the elusive threshold where compositional harmony emerges, a moment when the painting resonates.
“My obsession with painting is simple: I strip away the layers, unearthing the innate essence of painting. I am drawn to the fundamental, driven by a desire to expose the raw potential that paint carries when united with canvas. This act of reduction, of stripping away, is where the essence of my artistic expression thrives, as I strive to unearth the purity buried within the layers.”
“Life is made up of small victories, significant milestones, quiet reflections, and everything in between. Through my art, I aim to capture these moments, transitions, and the unexpected twists they bring. My paintings are like contemporary mandalas—using simplified circles and squares to symbolise the flow of life’s energy and guiding principles. The overlapping planes of colour don't suggest perfect order; rather, they reflect life’s inherent imperfections. While we may find comfort in certain beliefs or doctrines, true understanding comes when we confront ourselves. I hope my paintings offer a brief pause—a moment for personal introspection and self-discovery.”
We hope that the exhibition ‘Sacred Beauty’ and the apparent quietude that underpins Peter’s work, is an initial transitory stop; inviting the viewer to venture inward, to traverse the corridors of their own consciousness, and forge an intimate connection with the present moment.
'Sacred Beauty' will run from October 3rd - October 17th 2024 at Studio Gallery Armadale, 1238 High St, Armadale.
