About Vanessa Newell

"I paint in a flattened, graphic style that is partly influenced by the plans and drawings I created when working as a Landscape Architect, but also by the reference material I generate. Using photo editing software I overlay historical paintings with contemporary images until I find a powerful composition and a range of values that enable me to create an impactful painting. Often I will explore dozens of combinations before I find one that I am inspired to paint. My paintings are figurative, inspired by decorative Medieval artworks and ornamental Renaissance paintings, particularly those depicting stories of ancient mythology and folklore. Dramatic compositions and strong contrasts are the two elements of these historical art that I am trying to capture. I am also interested in the concept of duality, which can be found in the contrast between the images and techniques I use to create my work. These works are my contemporary interpretation of classical works and subjects." "Returning to painting as my second career, an interest in figurative art has influenced my work, but it is the graphic, hard-edge painting style that I now employ which has it roots in many years spent creating landscape designs and drawing two-dimensional plans. I am interested in dualities; the things we say that are not what we mean or the way we look on the outside which no longer equates to how we feel inside. In my paintings, the concept of duality is portrayed by the connection between past and present and the juxtaposition of traditional techniques with new technology. I am drawn to historical figurative compositions that depict stories from ancient myth and folklore, which I then manipulate and abstract until I find a contemporary way of continuing the narrative. I now live and work on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. My paintings have been sold both locally and internationally, and I have been a finalist in the Muswellbrook Art Prize, Manning Gallery Naked and Nude, the Kennedy Art Prize and the Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize, and have had three two-artist shows."
