It is with great pleasure that Studio Gallery presents Bathe, a new solo exhibition by Australian artist Marko Hrubyj-Piper. Bathe is a continuation of Marko Hrubyj-Piper’s exploration of the beach as both a physical landscape and a state of being. Drawing from friends, swimmers and passers by, Marko paints moments of togetherness and solitude beneath umbrellas, along the shoreline and within the deep blue ocean.
For Marko, the beach is an all consuming environment. The ocean breeze, the heat of the sun and the shifting energy of people moving through the water become starting points for paintings that explore what it means to be immersed in a place. There is a particular calmness to these scenes, balanced by the life and movement that unfold within them.
Working between brushwork and thick, expressive applications of paint with a palette knife, Marko continually returns to familiar imagery as a way of discovering new possibilities. Reworking and recycling his own visual references allows him to experiment with technique, challenge his skills and see how the same scene can become something entirely different.
Marko’s love of the ocean is inseparable from the people he shares it with. Bathe brings these two affections together in a body of work shaped by countless hours of painting, repetition and instinct.
Moving between considered observation and a stream of consciousness, the exhibition reflects an ongoing desire to understand the beach not simply as a place, but as an atmosphere, a feeling and an experience to be fully absorbed.
Through Bathe, Marko invites viewers to experience the familiar rhythms of coastal life through his distinctive artistic perspective. A celebration of the ocean, human connection and the simple pleasure of being immersed in one's surroundings, the exhibition captures the energy, warmth and quiet moments that make the beach such a meaningful part of Australian life.
