Passages explores the evolving relationship between people and the landscapes they move through. Created after relocating to the Mid North Coast, the works reflect a deepened connection to nature - where landforms, light, and memory intersect.

Spokes’ paintings oscillate between abstraction and representation, drawing on the human form as a subtle point of reference. Bold shapes and expansive colour fields evoke the contours and emotional tone of place, while avoiding literal depiction. These are not landscapes in the traditional sense, but reimagined spaces processed through gesture, colour, and feeling.

Central to Passages is the idea of the artwork as a threshold - a space between the viewer and the natural world. The paintings act as portals, inviting the viewer inward and offering a moment of stillness or movement within.

Rather than aiming to represent nature, Spokes considers how it is experienced, embodied and internalised. Passages invites the viewer to engage not just with the surface of the work, but with the shifting space it opens up - a passage into something at once familiar and unknown.
