Coming Up For Air

Lynn Savery Artist’s Statement:
The Rainkeeper
Based on Edward Thomas’ poem Rain, with its apparent sense of rain’s oblique relationship to memory and the past, the Rainkeeper evokes a stark and haunting image that draws in and holds all the emotions of solitude, or dreams of solitude, or loss, or dreams of loss, or indeed knowledge of loss. Coiled emotions that seem to lurk mysteriously beyond or within the surface, drawing the mind’s eye in toward a portentous landscape. It suggests something spirited, something that mattered once, a memory that moves to rhythm, fading. It also calls on an atmosphere in which time ticks loud on one stalled second. The Rainkeeper is a reflection on the past and the unforeseen future.
