About Bonnie Hislop

Bonnie is a highly skilled ceramicist, specialising in hand building and ceramic illustration. Grounded in technical skill, accumulated in experiences facilitating workshops around Australia, her practice has evolved from creating illustrative ceramic cats to large-scale sculptural works that investigate the human response to a global pandemic. Currently shifting to a practice of inquiry, Bonnie uses her forms to critically engage with the world around her. She documents the human experience as it manifests in the now. Working from her studio in Yeerongpilly, Bonnie meticulously hand crafts her creations through an involved and often uncertain process- that accompanies the tangible demands of this material. In its finality, she unites bright colours and satirical shapes to engage her audience in a dialogue with the physical world around them. Bonnie's work intersects traditional representations of ceramics with a craft aesthetic to create a contemporary interpretation of the ceramic medium. The artwork doesn’t take itself too seriously, and yet is able to capture personal experiences that are indeed universal to the human condition. Her practice aims to encapsulate shared experiences of frustration, angst, grief, emotional fatigue, as well as tenderness, intimacy and desire. The performative, vivid ceramics forge an existence of joy and curiosity.
