About Nick Olsen

Nick Olsen is a practicing artist based in Brisbane, Australia. A major focus in his life is looking at art, creating artworks and using this medium to help reveal his insights into our world. He is interested in the urban environment and places where the natural and urban meet. Nick is interested in how our living spaces reflect our cultural sensibilities through different times in our history. He depicts these places with a focus on light , tone and colour to create an image which may be seen from an alternative perspective. In doing so he hopes to engage the viewer by encouraging an emotional response. It has been said that his paintings, at times, create a somewhat surreal, other worldly feeling which conjure memories of a place rather than a true representation of the place. Nicks engaging artworks highlight pattern, line and form with a combination of high key colour and complimentary tones. He is always experimenting and his recent work has developed a sculptural element using impasto paint, collage and stenciling to emphasis the sharpness of the Australian light and shadow. ‘I often marvel at the world which we humans have created and I try to imagine what people will think, 500 years into the future, about the society which created the marvelous cities in which we now live. I see these places as vast concrete sculptures with powerful architectonic features . As an artist I like to represent a moment of history and I draw my inspiration from the built environment as much as from the natural world. My work is always evolving and I see my practice as a life-long pursuit of constant improvement.’
