About Tania Samuel

Tania Samuel is an English Abstract- Realist painter practicing in Melbourne, Australia. Initially beginning her education at The Camberwell College of Arts in London, Samuel majored in French and graduated with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. Her career has spanned multiple creative disciplines and continents, including her work in the Parisian fashion industry, and her subsequent career as a graphic designer in London and New York. Her move to Australia saw opportunity arise to pursue her passion, where she now successfully runs a commission-based practice out of her studio. Samuels now holds notable achievement as a finalist in the Bluethumb Art Prize 2022 and the Runner Up Prize for Still Life in the Bluethumb Art Prize 2021. Beauty arises where harmony manifests; when chaos is split open and the fragments of duality find their place in reality. Propelled by the notion that beauty occurs in the margins of time, its elements become invaluable. Just like a flower in spring, the manifestation of beauty comes in an instant, and though it ebbs away from the mundane in spectacular bloom, autumn beckons its call. Tania Samuel places the visual of the flower - in all its delicate layers and inferred movements - at the centre of her body of work. As a flower dances itself in and out of bloom, Samuel's floral depictions infer the transformation of a lifecycle and the demise of beauty through time. Interweaving, fragmented flowers collide in a liminal space, proposing to the viewer the multiple timelines that exist in a single image: the blooming, the bending, the withering, and the dying. Samuel's process plays with the boundaries of the Real and Imaginary, fusing elements of both in a dynamic mise en scene.
